Khairukum Modern Tsangaya is a boys’ boarding maʿhad in Tarauni, Kano, built around a single promise: a student arrives, and within one year he carries the Qur’an. What makes it modern is not the building — it is that every day of his memorisation is taught to a plan, and written down.
معهد خيركم لتحفيظ القرآن مدرسةٌ داخلية للبنين في تاروني بولاية كانو، قائمةٌ على وعدٍ واحد: يلتحق الطالب، وفي غضون عامٍ يحمل القرآن. وما يجعله «حديثًا» ليس المبنى، بل أنّ كل يومٍ من أيام حفظه يُدرَّس وفق خطة، ويُدوَّن.
What “modern tsangaya” means
The tsangaya gave northern Nigeria its huffaz for centuries, and we are not replacing it. The halqa, the malam, the discipline of daily recitation — all of it stays. What we added is everything a parent has a right to expect from a school: staff who are paid, meals and beds that are supervised, a nurse, and a written record of what your son did today.
A child sent away to memorise should not have to be sent away from being cared for.
Boarding here is a supervised household, not an afterthought. Each section has its own House Master living alongside the boys, responsible for wake-up before Fajr, meals, hygiene, bedtime and weekends. A school nurse watches nutrition and health, inspects the dormitories, and knows which child has not been eating. An Academic Supervisor sits above both sections, reviewing the teaching itself — lesson plans, classroom observation, and the pace each boy is actually keeping.
Boys who struggle are not left to fall behind quietly. Because progress is logged daily, a slowdown shows up in days rather than terms, and an individual support plan follows.
ما معنى «تسانغايا حديثة»
أعطت التسانغايا شمالَ نيجيريا حفّاظه قرونًا، ولسنا نستبدلها. الحلقة، والمعلّم، وانضباط التلاوة اليومية — كل ذلك باقٍ. وما أضفناه هو كلّ ما يحقّ لوليّ الأمر أن يتوقّعه من مدرسة: معلّمون يتقاضون رواتبهم، وطعامٌ وفراشٌ تحت إشراف، وممرّضة، وسجلٌّ مكتوبٌ لما فعله ابنك اليوم.
الطفل الذي يُرسَل ليحفظ لا ينبغي أن يُرسَل بعيدًا عن الرعاية.
الإقامة هنا بيتٌ تحت إشراف، لا أمرٌ ثانوي. لكل قسمٍ مشرف سكنٍ يقيم إلى جانب الطلاب، مسؤولٌ عن الإيقاظ قبل الفجر، والوجبات، والنظافة، ووقت النوم، وعطلة الأسبوع. وتتابع ممرّضة المعهد التغذية والصحة، وتفقد المهاجع، وتعرف أيّ طفلٍ امتنع عن الطعام. ويشرف على القسمين مشرفٌ أكاديمي يراجع التدريس نفسه — خطط الدروس، وزيارة الحلقات، والنسق الذي يسير عليه كل طالب فعلًا.
ولا يُترك المتعثّرون ليتخلّفوا في صمت. فلأنّ التقدّم يُدوَّن يوميًّا، يظهر التباطؤ خلال أيام لا فصول، وتتبعه خطة دعمٍ فردية.
The programme
The whole year is reverse-engineered from one number. The Qur’an is 604 pages. Divide it across twelve months of study and you get a pace a child can actually hold — roughly fifty pages a month, about two pages each study day, with revision built in alongside.
البرنامج
العام كلّه مبنيٌّ على رقمٍ واحد. المصحف ٦٠٤ صفحات. وزّعها على اثني عشر شهرًا من الدراسة تحصل على نسقٍ يستطيع الطفل أن يثبت عليه — نحو خمسين صفحةً في الشهر، وقرابة صفحتين في كل يومٍ دراسي، والمراجعة تسير إلى جانبها.
Two sections
So they are not taught as though they do. The school runs two separate sections, each with its own Head of Section, its own House Master, and memorisation schedules pitched at what that age can sustain without burning out.
الغِلمان
Ghilman · children’s section
Shorter, more frequent sittings, heavier repetition, and a house routine that protects sleep, meals and play. Recreation and physical activity are timetabled, not squeezed in — a child who is rested memorises faster than a child who is pushed.
الشَّباب
Shabab · teenagers’ section
Longer memorisation blocks, greater independence, and a heavier revision load, since more of the Qur’an is behind them and has to be held. Supporting subjects carry more weight here, and so does accountability for their own schedule.
Within each section, every boy is placed in a halqa — a study circle assigned to one teacher for the term. That teacher hears his recitation, logs his progress, and is the person you ask about your son.

ولذلك لا يُدرَّسان كأنّهما سواء. يعمل المعهد بقسمين منفصلين، لكلٍّ منهما رئيس قسمٍ ومشرف سكن، وجداولُ حفظٍ تناسب ما يحتمله ذلك السنّ دون إنهاك.
الغِلمان
قسم الغِلمان · الصغار
جلساتٌ أقصر وأكثر تكرارًا، وترديدٌ أوفر، ونظام سكنٍ يحمي النوم والطعام واللعب. ووقت الترفيه والنشاط البدني مجدولٌ لا مُقتطع — فالطفل المرتاح يحفظ أسرع من الطفل المُجهَد.
الشَّباب
قسم الشَّباب · اليافعون
فتراتُ حفظٍ أطول، واستقلالٌ أكبر، وعبءُ مراجعةٍ أثقل، لأنّ ما وراءهم من القرآن أكثر ويحتاج إلى إمساك. والمواد المساندة أوفر حظًّا هنا، وكذلك مسؤوليتهم عن جدولهم.
وداخل كل قسمٍ يُوضَع كل طالبٍ في حلقة — دائرةٍ دراسيةٍ مُسنَدةٍ إلى معلّمٍ واحدٍ للفصل. هو الذي يسمع تلاوته، ويدوّن تقدّمه، وهو الشخص الذي تسأله عن ابنك.
Beyond the memorising
Hifz is the spine of the year, but it is not the whole of it. Supporting Islamic sciences run alongside the halqa so that a boy leaves able to recite correctly, understand what he recites, and live by it.
The rules of recitation, drilled and examined — so that what is memorised is also pronounced correctly.
The meaning behind the memorised text, so the Qur’an is understood and not only held.
The Prophetic tradition ﷺ, and the manners it teaches, taken as part of the boy’s formation.
Practical rulings — purification, prayer, fasting — the things a young Muslim needs in order to worship correctly.
Language study that turns recitation into comprehension, and opens the texts beyond the muṣḥaf.
Where this tradition comes from, and the line of scholarship a boy is being joined to.
ما وراء الحفظ
الحفظ عمودُ العام، لكنّه ليس كلَّه. تسير العلوم الشرعية المساندة إلى جانب الحلقة، ليخرج الطالب قادرًا على أن يتلوَ صحيحًا، ويفهم ما يتلو، ويعمل به.
أحكام التلاوة، تدريبًا واختبارًا — ليكون ما يُحفَظ صحيح النطق كذلك.
المعنى وراء النصّ المحفوظ، ليُفهَم القرآن لا أن يُحمَل وحسب.
السنّة النبوية ﷺ وما تعلّمه من الآداب، تُؤخذ جزءًا من بناء الطالب.
الأحكام العملية — الطهارة والصلاة والصيام — ما يحتاجه المسلم الصغير ليعبد ربّه على صواب.
دراسةٌ تُحوّل التلاوة إلى فهم، وتفتح النصوص وراء المصحف.
من أين جاء هذا التراث، وأيّ سلسلةٍ من العلماء يُوصَل بها الطالب.
Life here
Memorisation is placed where the mind is sharpest and revision where it holds best. Between them sit meals, rest and recreation — supervised, and treated as part of the method rather than an interruption to it.
The House Master wakes the section for wuḍūʼ and congregational prayer. Nobody is left to sleep through it.
The freshest hours of the day go to new memorisation, while the mind is clearest and least crowded.
Each boy recites to his own teacher, in his own circle. What he managed — and how well — is logged the same day.
Congregational prayer, a supervised meal with proper dining etiquette expected, then a genuine rest period.
Tajwīd, Arabic, Fiqh and the rest, taught on a timetable by the teacher assigned to that subject for the term.
Revision of what is already memorised. This is the part that decides whether a hafiz keeps the Qur’an or loses it, so it is scheduled, not optional.
Evening prayer, the last reading of the day, hygiene and bed — with the House Master on duty through the night.
الحياة هنا
يوضع الحفظ حيث يكون الذهن أصفى، والمراجعة حيث تثبت أكثر. وبينهما الطعام والراحة والترفيه — تحت إشراف، وتُعَدّ جزءًا من المنهج لا انقطاعًا عنه.
يوقظ مشرف السكن القسم للوضوء وصلاة الجماعة. ولا يُترك أحدٌ نائمًا عنها.
تذهب أصفى ساعات النهار إلى الحفظ الجديد، والذهن أنقى وأقلّ ازدحامًا.
يتلو كل طالبٍ على معلّمه في حلقته. وما أنجزه — وكيف أتقنه — يُدوَّن في اليوم نفسه.
صلاة الجماعة، ووجبةٌ تحت إشراف بآداب الطعام المرعيّة، ثم فترة راحةٍ حقيقية.
التجويد والعربية والفقه وغيرها، تُدرَّس بجدولٍ على يد المعلّم المسنَد إلى تلك المادة للفصل.
مراجعة ما سبق حفظه. وهي التي تقرّر أيبقى الحافظ حافظًا أم يتفلّت منه القرآن، ولذلك هي مجدولةٌ لا اختيارية.
صلاة العشاء، وآخر قراءةٍ في اليوم، والنظافة والنوم — ومشرف السكن على رأس عمله طوال الليل.
What gets written down
The school runs on its own record system rather than on paper registers and memory. Attendance, memorisation, results and every naira of fees are entered by the staff responsible and kept term by term — which means a parent’s questions have answers that can be produced, not recalled.
His teacher records what he memorised and revised each day. It is reviewed above him by the Head of Section and the Director — so the pace is watched by more than one pair of eyes.
Marked by the class teacher, reviewable across the whole section. A boy cannot quietly stop turning up.
Continuous assessment and examination scores, totalled against the school’s grading scale, with a clear pass or fail — not an impression.
Each payment is recorded and produces a printable receipt. Unpaid balances carry forward between terms instead of disappearing, so what a family owes is never in dispute.
Fee waivers are recorded against the student and adjust what is owed automatically. A family in difficulty should talk to us.
Staff see only what their job requires. A teacher works with his own class and nothing else. Money is handled by the Accountant and the Director. Accounts and system settings sit with the Admin, who deliberately cannot touch payments — so the person who manages the logins is never the person who handles the cash.
That separation is not a policy on a wall. It is enforced by the system itself, at the level of the data, for every single request.
ما يُدوَّن
يعمل المعهد بنظام سجلاتٍ خاصٍّ به بدل الدفاتر الورقية والذاكرة. الحضور والحفظ والنتائج وكلُّ نيرةٍ من الرسوم يدخلها الموظف المسؤول وتُحفظ فصلًا بعد فصل — أي أنّ أسئلة وليّ الأمر لها أجوبةٌ تُستخرج لا تُستذكر.
يدوّن معلّمه ما حفظه وما راجعه كل يوم. ويراجعه فوقه رئيس القسم والمدير — فيكون النسق تحت أكثر من عين.
يرصده معلّم الحلقة، ويمكن مراجعته على مستوى القسم كلّه. فلا ينقطع طالبٌ في صمت.
درجات التقويم المستمر والاختبارات، تُجمَع على سلّم التقدير المعتمد في المعهد، بنجاحٍ أو رسوبٍ صريح — لا بانطباع.
تُسجَّل كل دفعةٍ ويصدر عنها إيصالٌ قابلٌ للطباعة. والأرصدة غير المسدَّدة تُرحَّل بين الفصول بدل أن تختفي، فلا يقع خلافٌ على ما على الأسرة.
تُسجَّل إعفاءات الرسوم باسم الطالب وتعدّل ما عليه تلقائيًّا. والأسرة المتعسّرة ينبغي أن تحدّثنا.
لا يرى الموظف إلا ما يقتضيه عمله. فالمعلّم يعمل مع حلقته لا غير. والمال يتولّاه المحاسب والمدير. أمّا الحسابات وإعدادات النظام فعند المشرف الإداري، وهو عن قصدٍ لا يملك الوصول إلى المدفوعات — فلا يكون من يدير حسابات الدخول هو من يتولّى النقد.
وهذا الفصل ليس لائحةً معلّقة على جدار، بل يفرضه النظام نفسه، على مستوى البيانات، مع كل طلبٍ يُرسَل.
Admissions
Places are offered to boys with a genuine commitment to memorising, and admission is handled personally rather than through a form. Call, or visit the school in Darmanawa and see the halqa running.
Your son’s age and how much he has already memorised, if any. Whether he has boarded before. Anything about his health or his temperament we ought to know before he moves in. And your questions about fees — we would rather discuss them plainly at the start than have a balance surprise you later.
If the fees are beyond what your family can manage right now, say so when you call. Scholarships and discounts exist for exactly that reason, and a boy who wants to memorise should be talking to us either way.
القبول
تُمنَح المقاعد لمن صدقت عزيمته على الحفظ، ويُدار القبول شخصيًّا لا عبر استمارة. اتصل، أو زُر المعهد في درمناوا وانظر إلى الحلقة وهي تعمل.
عمر ابنك، ومقدار ما حفظه إن كان قد حفظ. وهل سبق له السكن الداخلي. وكل ما ينبغي أن نعلمه عن صحته أو طبعه قبل أن ينتقل إلينا. وأسئلتك عن الرسوم — فنحن نؤثر أن نتحدّث فيها بوضوحٍ من البداية على أن يفاجئك رصيدٌ بعد حين.
وإن كانت الرسوم فوق ما تحتمله أسرتك الآن، فقل ذلك حين تتصل. فالمنح والخصومات موجودةٌ لهذا السبب بعينه، ومن أراد أن يحفظ فينبغي أن يحدّثنا على كل حال.
